To complete the short biography which is in your school books (Broadways, page 106), you will find here a few tips about this British author, who was born in Paris in 1874 and died in... Nice in 1965.
As a matter of fact, Wiliam Somerset Maugham was born in Paris because his father worked as a lawyer for the British Embassy, but because he was born in the Embassy itself, considered as British soil, he was not French.
He is said to have been influenced by Guy de Maupassant in some of his works.
Surprisingly, he was not only a writer, but he was also a doctor, and a spy during World War I and World War II! He was sent to Russia, to try and prevent the outbreak of the Russian revolution. The novel The British Agent (1928) is partly autobiographical.
